Well, we are getting married in October 2025 in Kazaviti, and one weekend while preparing for the wedding, I wondered: what does a Greek Orthodox priest say during a wedding?
You see, we ordinary mortal Greeks don’t understand what an Orthodox priest is saying in any given ritual, including a wedding.
Can someone who has not studied Ancient Greek, which is very different from modern Greek, actually understand what a priest is saying?
The answer is No. And I know firsthand since I belong to that group.
That’s why we sat down and worked on translating the text into English based on official modern Greek translations available online.
First, a few words about the ceremony:
The ritual is actually composed of two distinct services conducted back-to-back: the Betrothal Service and the Sacrament of Crowning (Marriage). Each part contains rich symbolism and actions that signify spiritual truths about marriage.

Betrothal & Ring Exchange
The ceremony usually opens in the narthex (entrance) of the church with the Service of Betrothal, which centers around the exchange of rings. The priest offers prayers of betrothal and blesses the rings, then touches them to the foreheads of bride and groom in the sign of the cross three times.
He then places the rings on the right hand ring finger of each (the right hand is associated with God’s authority and blessing). At this point, the koumbaros or koumbara (the wedding sponsor, who is typically the best man or maid of honor) steps forward to swap the rings between the bride and groom’s fingers three times.
This ritual of the triple exchange signifies that in marriage the lives of the two individuals become deeply intertwined – what each lacks, the other will fulfill, and their destinies are now linked in unity. The ring itself, a circle with no end, symbolizes eternal love, and in Orthodox prayers it also represents a seal of God’s promise to bless the union.
When the Betrothal service concludes, the engagement is canonically affirmed and the couple officially “pledges” themselves to one another in the eyes of the Church.
The Service of Crowning
After the rings, the wedding party moves further into the church for the second and more elaborate part of the rite, the Crowning service (the actual marriage sacrament). The priest begins with petitions and prayers invoking the Holy Trinity to unite and bless the couple. A series of beautiful rituals then follows:
- Lighting of Candles: The bride and groom are each given a white candle to hold (usually in their left hand). The flames symbolize the light of Christ and the joy of this sacrament. As the couple holds these candles, they signify their willingness to receive Christ’s illumination in their new life together. The two separate flames also represent the two individuals, who will soon become one light in marriage under God’s grace.
- Joining of Hands: At a key moment, the priest takes the bride’s and groom’s right hands and joins them together while reciting a prayer. The right-hand joining, which the priest keeps bound through much of the service, is an ancient symbol that God has now bound the couple in an unbreakable union. It echoes the biblical phrase “the two shall become one flesh,” and signifies that from this point on, the bride and groom will walk hand-in-hand in life.
- The Crowning (Stefana): The crowning ceremony is the pinnacle of the Orthodox wedding. The priest holds two ornate wedding crowns (stefana) which are connected by a white ribbon, and first blesses the couple with them. Then he places the crowns upon the heads of the groom and the bride, intoning the invocation: “O Lord our God, crown them with glory and honor”. The koumbaros/a again participates by gently interchanging the crowns between the bride and groom’s heads three times, reinforcing that the two are now crowned as one in marriage. The stefana have deep meaning in Orthodox theology. They are a sign of the glory and honor God bestows on the couple as they become king and queen of their new household. The linked ribbon denotes their unity – they are separate persons, yet bound together by God into one family. The crowns also carry a sobering symbolism: they are likened to the crowns of martyrdom, reminding the bride and groom that marriage requires self-sacrifice, love, and even “dying” to one’s ego for the sake of the other. In being crowned, the couple accepts a call to mutual service and devotion, with Christ at the center of their union. The Gospel story of turning water into wine at a marriage feast highlights Christ’s blessing on marriage and the joy He brings, and it segues into the next ritual – the common cup. It is also a liturgical echo of the Cana miracle (where Jesus turned water to wine for the newlyweds), reminding the pair that Christ will be the one who transforms and blesses their journey. Notably, this is not a Eucharistic cup but a ceremonial one; however, many Orthodox couples will later receive Holy Communion together at their first Sunday Liturgy as husband and wife.

- The Ceremonial Walk (Dance of Isaiah): Immediately after the drinking of the wine, the priest resumes holding the couple’s joined hands and, with the cantor singing jubilant hymns, leads the bride and groom in a circular procession three times around the altar or central table. This circular procession, often called the “Dance of Isaiah,” is accompanied by a hymn that begins “Rejoice, O Isaiah, a Virgin is with child…” – linking the joy of the prophet Isaiah (who foretold the coming of Christ) to the joy of this moment. As they circle three times, additional hymns praise the Holy Martyrs and the Holy Trinity. The circular motion represents eternity (as a circle has no end) and the walking in unity signifies the couple’s first steps together as a married couple, with the Church (through the priest and koumbaros, who often holds the ribbon of the crowns) guiding them. Traditionally, this “dance” was like leading the couple into their new home and life. It is a celebratory highlight – many couples smile or tear up as they are literally guided around the sanctuary, hand in hand, crowned in glory, while guests may throw rice or rose petals during these first steps. (Indeed, in some locales it is during this circle dance that guests start showering the couple with rice – symbolically “planting” them for a fruitful life.)
- Removal of Crowns & Final Blessing: After the third circle, the priest halts the procession and recites final prayers. He then lifts the crowns from the bride and groom’s heads, declaring in a prayerful exhortation: “May God accept your crowns in His Kingdom, keeping them pure and undefiled forever”. This touching statement reminds the couple that the marriage crowns are not just for this life, but are a foretaste of the heavenly crown of glory – a hope that their union is blessed now and eternally. The priest then separates the couple’s joined hands, which were held together since the blessing, signifying that only God can dissolve the bond that has just been formed. Finally, he invokes special blessings on the newlyweds: addressing the groom, “Be magnified, O Bridegroom, like Abraham, and blessed like Isaac…”, and to the bride, “And you, O Bride, be exalted like Sarah and rejoice like Rebecca…”. By referencing these biblical couples, the Church prays that the newlyweds emulate the faith, happiness, and prosperity of righteous ancestors. With the pronouncement of the marriage as an accomplished sacrament, the formal ceremony concludes. The couple is now officially married, joined not by a legal contract or spoken promises, but by the grace of the Holy Spirit through the Church’s mysteries. Before leaving, the bride and groom may venerate an icon (often of the Virgin Mary) together and then walk back down the aisle, greeted as “Mr. and Mrs.” for the first time.

Ὁ Θεὸς ὁ αἰώνιος, αὐτὸς ποὺ συνέζευξες, συµπλησίασες καὶ ἕνωσες τὰ διεστῶτα, ὅσα δηλαδὴ ἦταν χωρισµένα, καὶ συνδέεις µὲ ἀδιάσπαστο δεσµὸ καθετὶ ποὺ εἶναι πρὸς τακτοποίηση καὶ διαῤῥύθµιση· αὐτὸς ποὺ εὐλόγησες τὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ τὴ Ῥεβέκκα καὶ τοὺς ἀνέδειξες κληρονόµους τῆς δικῆς σου ἐπαγγελίας12, τῆς ὑπόσχεσης δηλ. ποὺ ἔδωσες στὸν Ἀβραὰµ σχετικὰ µὲ τὴ «γῆ Χαναὰν» καὶ τὴν εὐλογία ὁλόκληρου τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου γένους· σὺ ὁ ἴδιος εὐλόγησε καὶ τοὺς δούλους σου τούτους, ὁδηγώντας τους σὲ κάθε ἔργο ἀγαθό. |

Διὰ δακτυλιδίου ἐδόθη ἡ ἐξουσία τῷ Ἰωσὴφ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ· διὰ δακτυλιδίου ἐδοξάσθη Δανιὴλ ἐν χώρᾳ Βαβυλῶνος· διὰ δακτυλιδίου ἐφανερώθη ἡ ἀλήθεια τῆς Θάµαρ· διὰ δακτυλιδίου ὁ Πατὴρ ἡµῶν ὁ οὐράνιος οἰκτίρµων γέγονεν ἐπὶ τὸν ἄσωτον υἱόν· «Δότε γάρ, φησι, δακτύλιον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέγκαντες τὸν µόσχον τὸν σιτευτὸν θύσατε, καὶ φαγόντες εὐφρανθῶµεν». | With a ring authority was given to Joseph in Egypt²²; with a ring Daniel was honored in the land of Babylon²³; with a ring the truth of Tamar was made manifest²⁴; with a ring our heavenly Father showed His compassion and sympathy to the prodigal son; for the Gospel says: “Give a ring on his hand for him to wear, and after you bring the fatted calf—that is, the one we feed specially for some joyful occasion—kill it, and after we eat, let us rejoice and celebrate”²⁵. | Μὲ δαχτυλίδι δόθηκε ἡ ἐξουσία στὸν Ἰωσὴφ στὴν Αἴγυπτο22· µὲ δαχτυλίδι δοξάστηκε ὁ Δανιὴλ στὴ χώρα τῆς Βαβυλώνας23· µὲ δαχτυλίδι φανερώθηκε ἡ ἀλήθεια τῆς Θάµαρ24· µὲ δαχτυλίδι ὁ οὐράνιος Πατέρας µας ἔδειξε τὴν εὐσπλαχνία του καὶ τὴ συµπάθειά του στὸν ἄσωτο υἱό· «διότι λέει τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο· Δῶστε δαχτυλίδι στὸ χέρι του νὰ••• τὸ φοράει καὶ ἀφοῦ φέρετε τὸ µοσχάρι τὸ σιτευτό, αὐτὸ δηλ. ποὺ τρέφουµε ξεχωριστὰ γιὰ κάποιο χαρµόσυνο γεγονός, σφάξτε το, καὶ ἀφοῦ φᾶµε, ἂς χαροῦµε καὶ ἂς διασκεδάσουµε»25. |
Αὕτη ἡ δεξιά σου, Κύριε, τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐστρατοπέδευσεν ἐν Ἐρυθρᾷ θαλάσσῃ· διὰ γὰρ τοῦ λόγου σου τοῦ ἀληθινοῦ οἱ οὐρανοὶ ἐστερεώθησαν καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐθεµελιώθη· καὶ ἡ δεξιὰ τῶν δούλων σου εὐλογηθήσεται τῷ λόγῳ σου τῷ κραταιῷ καὶ τῷ βραχίονί σου τῷ ὑψηλῷ. | This Your right hand, O Lord, made Moses encamp at the Red Sea²⁶; for by Your genuine and true word the heavens were established and the earth was founded²⁷; and the right hand of Your servants will be blessed by Your mighty word and Your exalted arm²⁸. | Αὐτὸ τὸ δεξί σου χέρι, Κύριε, ἔκαµε τὸ Μωϋσῆ νὰ••• στρατοπεδεύσει στὴν Ἐρυθρὰ θάλασσα26· διότι µὲ τὸ λόγο σου τὸ γνήσιο καὶ τὸν ἀληθινὸ στερεώθηκαν οἱ οὐρανοὶ καὶ θεµελιώθηκε ἡ γῆ27· καὶ τὸ δεξὶ χέρι τῶν δούλων σου θὰ εὐλογηθεῖ µὲ τὸ λόγο σου τὸ δυνατὸ καὶ τὸ βραχίονα σου τὸν ὑψηλὸ28. |
Αὐτὸς οὖν καὶ νῦν, Δέσποτα, εὐλόγησον τὸ δακτυλοθέσιον τοῦτο εὐλογίαν οὐράνιον· καὶ Ἄγγελος Κυρίου προπορευέσθω ἔµπροσθεν αὐτῶν πάσας τὰς ἡµέρας τῆς ζωῆς αὐτῶν. | Do You Yourself, therefore, even now, Master, bless with the blessing of the heavens (with the divine blessing) this placing of the ring; and may an Angel of the Lord go before the newlyweds all the days of their life. | Αὐτὸς ὁ ἴδιος λοιπὸν καὶ τώρα, Δέσποτα, εὐλόγησε µὲ τὴν εὐλογία τῶν οὐρανῶν (µὲ τὴ θεία εὐλογία) τὸ δακτυλοθέσιο τοῦτο· καὶ Ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἂς προπορεύεται µπροστὰ ἀπὸ τοὺς νεονύµφους ὅλες τὶς ἡµέρες τῆς ζωῆς τους. |

O God, the immaculate *(sinless)* and Maker of all creation *(the universe)*, who from Your great love for humankind transformed the rib of our forefather Adam into a woman, and after blessing the first-formed You said to them: “Increase in number, multiply, and become masters over the earth”; and You presented both of them as one member through the union; for because of this union a man will leave his father and his mother and will cling to his own wife, and the two will become one flesh *(one …)* … You who blessed Abraham and Sarah, and made him the father *(founding ancestor)* of a multitude; You who granted Isaac and Rebekah fruitfulness and blessed them; You who joined Jacob and revealed from him the twelve patriarchs; You who united Joseph and Aseneth and made him lord of Egypt; You who appeared to Moses in the bush and taught him Your laws; You who heard Anna’s prayer and granted her Samuel; You who blessed Zachariah and Elizabeth and revealed their child *(John)* as the Forerunner of Christ; You who from the line of Jesse caused the Ever‑Virgin Mary to spring forth physically and from her became incarnate and were born Yourself in order to save the race of humankind; You who, out of surpassing love *(inexpressible gift)* and great goodness *(kindness)*, came to Cana of Galilee and blessed the marriage that took place there, to make clear to people that lawful union of man and woman and the child‑bearing that follows are Your will. | *Ὁ χορός·* Κύριε, ἐλέησέ µας. Ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἄχραντος *(ὁ ἀναµάρτητος)* καὶ δηµιουργὸς ὅλης τῆς κτίσης *(τοῦ σύµπαντος)* ποὺ ἀπὸ τὴ µεγάλη σου ἀγάπη πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπο µεταµόρφωσες τὴν πλευρὰ τοῦ προπάτορά µας Ἀδὰµ σὲ γυναίκα καὶ ἀφοῦ εὐλόγησες τοὺς πρωτόπλαστους τοὺς εἶπες· «Νὰ••• αὐξάνεστε σὲ ἀριθµό, νὰ••• πολλαπλασιάζεστε καὶ νὰ••• γίνετε κυρίαρχοι στὴ γῆ» καὶ τοὺς παρουσίασες καὶ τοὺς δύο αὐτοὺς ὡς ἕνα µέλος µὲ τὴ σύζευξη· διότι γι᾿ αὐτὴ τὴ σύζευξη θὰ ἐγκαταλείψει ὁ ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα του καὶ τὴ µητέρα του καὶ θὰ προσκολληθεῖ στὴν ἴδια τὴ γυναίκα του καὶ θὰ γίνουν οἱ δυό τους µία σάρκα *(ἕνα σῶµα)*· καὶ αὐτοὺς ποὺ σύνδεσε µὲ τὸ δεσµὸ τοῦ γάµου ὁ Θεός, ὁ ἄνθρωπος νὰ••• µὴν τοὺς χωρίζει11· Ʃὺ ποὺ εὐλόγησες τὸν πιστό σου δοῦλο Ἀβραὰµ καὶ ἔκαµες τὴ Ʃάῤῥα νὰ••• τεκνοποιήσει καὶ κατέστησες τὸν Ἀβραὰµ πατέρα *(γενάρχη)* πλήθους ἐθνῶν· Ʃὺ ποὺ χάρισες στὴ Ῥεβέκκα τὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ εὐλόγησες τὸ γόνο της· Ʃὺ ποὺ ἕνωσες µὲ γάµο τὸν Ἰακὼβ µὲ τὴ Ῥαχὴλ καὶ ἀνέδειξες αὐτὸν *(τὸν Ἰακὼβ)* γενάρχη τῶν δώδεκα Πατριαρχῶν· Ʃὺ ποὺ συνέζευξες τὸν Ἰωσὴφ καὶ τὴν Ἀσυνὲθ καὶ χάρισες σ᾿ αὐτοὺς τὸν Ἐφραὶµ καὶ τὸν Μανασσῆ ὡς καρποὺς τῆς τεκνογονίας τους· Ʃὺ ποὺ ἐκδήλωσες τὴν ἀγάπη σου στὸ Ζαχαρία καὶ τὴν Ἐλισάβετ καὶ ἀνέδειξες τὸ τέκνο τους *(τὸν Ἰωάννη)* Πρόδροµο τοῦ Χριστοῦ· Ʃὺ ποὺ ἀπὸ τὸ γένος τοῦ Ἰεσσαὶ ἔκαµες νὰ••• βλαστήσει *(προέλθει)* σαρκικῶς ἡ ἀειπάρθενος Μαρία καὶ ἀπὸ αὐτὴ σαρκώθηκες καὶ γεννήθηκες ὁ ἴδιος προκειµένου νὰ••• σώσεις τὸ γένος τῶν ἀνθρώπων12· Ʃὺ ποὺ ἀπὸ ὑπερβολικὴ ἀγάπη *(ἀνέκφραστη δωρεὰ)* καὶ ἀπὸ πολλὴ ἀγαθότητα *(καλοσύνη)* ἦρθες στὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ εὐλόγησες τὸ γάµο ποὺ ἔγινε ἐκεῖ, γιὰ νὰ••• κάνεις φανερὸ στοὺς ἀνθρώπους ὅτι δικό σου θέληµα εἶναι ἡ νόµιµη σύζευξη τοῦ ἄνδρα καὶ τῆς γυναίκας καὶ ἡ συνακόλουθη τεκνοποιία. |
Αὐτός, Δέσποτα Πανάγιε, πρόσδεξαι τὴν δέησιν ἡµῶν τῶν ἱκετῶν σου, ὡς ἐκεῖσε καὶ ἐνταῦθα παραγενόµενος τῇ ἀοράτῳ σου ἐπιστασίᾳ· εὐλόγησον τὸν γάµον τοῦτον, καὶ παράσχου τοῖς δούλοις σου τούτοις *(τῷ δεῖνι)* καὶ *(τῇ δεῖνι)* ζωὴν εἰρηνικήν, µακροηµέρευσιν, σωφροσύνην, τὴν εἰς ἀλλήλους ἀγάπην ἐν τῷ συνδέσµῳ τῆς εἰρήνης, σπέρµα µακρόβιον, τὴν ἐπὶ τέκνοις χάριν, τὸν ἀµαράντινον τῆς δόξης στέφανον. | You Yourself, O All‑Holy Master, receive with condescension our supplication as we implore *(beseech)* You; and as You were present there *(at Cana)*, so also be present here with Your invisible presence. Ἀξίωσον αὐτοὺς ἰδεῖν τέκνα τέκνων· τὴν κοίτην αὐτῶν ἀνεπιβούλευτον διατήρησον· καὶ δὸς αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς δρόσου τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἄνωθεν, καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς πιότητος τῆς γῆς· ἔµπλησον τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν σίτου, οἴνου καὶ ἐλέου καὶ πάσης ἀγαθωσύνης, ἵνα µεταδιδῶσι καὶ τοῖς χρείαν ἔχουσι, δωρούµενος ἅµα καὶ τοῖς συµπαροῦσι πάντα τὰ πρὸς σωτηρίαν αἰτήµατα. | Make them worthy to see the children of their children *(grandchildren)*; preserve their marriage bed *(the bridal bed)* undefiled from every assault *(marital betrayal)*; and grant them heavenly good things, blessings which Your grace and favor bestow abundantly, as well as earthly good things, good things which the earth abundantly produces. Fill the rooms of the house *(the home)* of the newlyweds with earthly good things—with wheat, wine, and oil, and with all good gifts—so that they may give from these also to those who are in need, while at the same time fulfilling all the petitions that pertain to salvation, and of all those who are present at this marriage. | Ἀξίωσέ τους νὰ••• ἰδοῦν τέκνα τῶν τέκνων τους *(ἐγγόνια)*· διατήρησε τὴ νυφική τους κλίνη *(τὸ νυφικὸ κρεβάτι)* ἀµόλυντη ἀπὸ κάθε ἐπιβουλὴ *(συζυγικὴ ἀπάτη)*15· καὶ χάρισέ τους ἀγαθὰ οὐράνια, ἀγαθὰ ποὺ ἐπιδαψιλεύει *(χορηγεῖ ἄφθονα)* ἡ δική σου χάρη καὶ εὐλογία, καθὼς καὶ ἀγαθὰ ἐπίγεια, ἀγαθὰ ποὺ παράγει ἄφθονα ἡ γῆ16· γέµισε τοὺς χώρους τῆς οἰκίας *(τὸ σπίτι)* τῶν νεονύµφων µὲ ἐπίγεια ἀγαθά, µὲ σιτάρι, κρασὶ καὶ λάδι καὶ µὲ ὅλα τὰ καλά, γιὰ νὰ••• δίνουν ἀπ᾿ αὐτὰ καὶ σ᾿ ὅσους ἔχουν ἀνάγκη17, ἱκανοποιώντας ταυτόχρονα ὅλα τὰ αἰτήµατα, ποὺ ἔχουν σχέση µὲ τὴ σωτηρία, καὶ ὅλων αὐτῶν ποὺ εἶναι παρόντες σ᾿ αὐτὸ ἐδῶ τὸ γάµο18. |

And now, Master, You Yourself who formed man in the beginning and made him lord of creation and said: “It is not good for the man to be alone upon the earth; let us make for him, for his good, a helper like himself,” and “for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and the two will become one flesh *(they will be united bodily)*”; and “those whom God has joined together by the bond of marriage, let man *(no person)* not separate.” Do You Yourself now *(at this moment)*, Master Lord, our God, send down from on high Your heavenly grace upon these Your servants *(N.) and *(N.); and grant *(make)* that this young handmaid of Yours be in all things subject to her husband, and that this Your servant be the head of his wife, so that they may live according to Your will. | *Ὁ χορός·* Κύριε, ἐλέησέ µας Ἄξιος εὐλογίας εἶσαι, Κύριε ὁ Θεός µας, Ʃὺ ποὺ µὲ τρόπο θεῖο καὶ ἱερὸ τέλεσες *(πραγµατοποίησες)* τὸ µυστικὸ καὶ ἄχραντο *(ἁγνὸ)* γάµο σου µὲ τὴν Ἐκκλησία19 καὶ νοµοθέτησες τὸ σωµατικὸ *(σαρκικὸ)* γάµο, Ʃὺ ποὺ εἶσαι ὁ φύλακας τῆς ἁγνότητας καὶ ὁ ἀγαθὸς οἰκονόµος *(χορηγὸς)* τῶν ὑλικῶν ἀγαθῶν· καὶ τώρα, Δέσποτα, Ʃὺ ὁ ἴδιος ποὺ ἔπλασες ἀρχικὰ τὸν ἄνθρωπο καὶ τὸν ἔκαµες *(κατέστησες)* κυρίαρχο τῆς κτίσεως καὶ εἶπες· «Δὲν εἶναι ὡραῖο νὰ••• εἶναι µόνος του ὁ ἄνθρωπος πάνω στὴ γῆ· ἂς δηµιουργήσουµε γιὰ χάρη του, γιὰ τὸ καλό του ἕνα βοηθὸ ὅµοιο µ᾿ αὐτόν»· καί, ἀφοῦ ἔλαβες µιὰ ἀπὸ τὶς πλευρές του, ἔπλασες τὴ γυναίκα, ποὺ ὅταν τὴν εἶδε ὁ Ἀδὰµ εἶπε· «Αὐτὸ τὸ πλάσµα ποὺ βλέπω τώρα εἶναι µέρος ἀπὸ τὰ ὀστά µου *(κόκαλο ἀπὸ τὰ κόκαλά µου)* καὶ σάρκα ἀπὸ τὴ σάρκα µου· αὐτὸ τὸ πλάσµα θὰ κληθεῖ *(θὰ ὀνοµαστεῖ)* γυναίκα, γιατί••• ἀπὸ τὸν ἄντρα της ἔγινε *(προῆλθε)*20· γι᾿ αὐτὸ τὸ πλάσµα θὰ ἐγκαταλείψει ὁ ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα του καὶ τὴ µητέρα του καὶ θὰ προσκολληθεῖ *(ἀφοσιωθεῖ)* στὴ γυναίκα του καὶ θὰ γίνουν οἱ δυό τους µιὰ σάρκα *(θὰ ἑνωθοῦν σωµατικὰ)*»21· καὶ «αὐτοὺς ποὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἕνωσε µὲ τὸ δεσµὸ τοῦ γάµου, ὁ ἄνθρωπος *(κανένας ἄνθρωπος)* νὰ••• µὴν τοὺς χωρίζει»22· Ʃὺ ὁ ἴδιος καὶ τώρα *(αὐτὴ τὴ στιγµὴ)*, Δέσποτα Κύριε, ὁ Θεὸς µας, στεῖλε ἀπὸ ψηλὰ τὴν ἐπουράνια χάρη σου σ᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐδῶ τοὺς δούλους σου *(τὸν τάδε)* καὶ *(τὴν τάδε)*· καὶ δῶσε *(κάµε)* ὥστε αὐτὴ ἐδῶ ἡ νεαρὴ δούλη σου νὰ••• ὑποταχθεῖ καθ᾿ ὅλα στὸν ἄντρα της καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδῶ ὁ δοῦλος σου νὰ••• εἶναι ἡ κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναίκας του23, γιὰ νὰ••• ζήσουν σύµφωνα µὲ τὸ θέληµά σου. |

Ὕστερα ὁ Ἱερέας ἀνασηκώνει καὶ τοποθετεῖ πάνω ἀπὸ τὰ κεφάλια τῶν νεονύµφων τὰ στέφανα· καὶ ἀφοῦ ἀνασηκώσει τὸ στεφάνι τοῦ Νυµφίου *(γαµπροῦ)*, λέγει· Μεγάλος στὴν πίστη καὶ τὴν τήρηση τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ νὰ••• γίνεις, Νυµφίε, ὅπως µεγάλος γιὰ τὴν πίστη του στὸ Θεό, τὴν ἀρετή του καὶ τὴν τήρηση τοῦ θείου θελήµατος ἔγινε ὁ Ἀβραάµ· εἴθε νὰ••• σὲ εὐλογήσει ὁ Θεός, ὅπως εὐλόγησε τὸν Ἰσαάκ, καὶ εἴθε νὰ••• ἀποκτήσεις πλῆθος ἀπογόνων, ὅπως ὁ Ἰακώβ, ζώντας µὲ εἰρήνη καὶ ψυχικὴ γαλήνη καὶ ἐφαρµόζοντας τὶς ἐντολὲς τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὅπως ἐπιβάλλει *(ἀπαιτεῖ, ὁρίζει)* ἡ θεία δικαιοσύνη53. |
“Καὶ ἐν τῷ τῆς Νύµφης λέγει· Καὶ σύ, Νύµφη, µεγαλύνθητι ὡς ἡ Ʃάῤῥα, καὶ εὐφράνθητι ὡς ἡ Ῥεβέκκα, καὶ πληθύνθητι ὡς ἡ Ῥαχήλ, εὐφραινοµένη τῷ ἰδίῳ ἀνδρί, φυλάττουσα τοὺς ὅρους τοῦ νόµου, ὅτι οὕτως ηὐδόκησεν ὁ Θεός. | After the triple procession the priest, standing at the little table, takes the crowns and places them upon the table; then, lifting the crown of the bride, he says: Be exalted, O Bride, like Sarah; and rejoice like Rebekah; and multiply like Rachel, rejoicing in your own husband and keeping the commandments of the law, because this is pleasing to God. | Καὶ καθὼς ἀνασηκώνει τὸ στεφάνι τῆς Νύµφης λέγει· Καὶ σύ, Νύφη, εἴθε νὰ••• γίνεις µεγάλη, ὅπως µεγάλη γιὰ τὴν ἀγάπη της καὶ τὸ σεβασµὸ πρὸς τὸν ἄντρα της ἔγινε ἡ Ʃάῤῥα, καὶ εἴθε νὰ••• εὐφρανθεῖς, ὅπως ἡ Ῥεβέκκα, καὶ εἴθε νὰ••• δεῖς πλῆθος τέκνων, ὅπως ἡ Ῥαχήλ, νιώθοντας πληρότητα χαρᾶς καὶ εὐφροσύνης µὲ τὸν ἄντρα σου, φυλάγοντας ὅ,τι ὁρίζει ὁ νόµος τοῦ Θεοῦ· διότι ἔτσι θέλησε ὁ Θεὸς νὰ••• γίνεται στὸ γάµο, ἔτσι µὲ τὴν πανσοφία του τὰ κανόνισε ὁ Θεὸς54. |

Καὶ ὁ Ἱερεὺς τὴν Εὐχὴν ταύτην· Ὁ Θεός, ὁ Θεὸς ἡµῶν, ὁ παραγενόµενος ἐν Κανᾷ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ τὸν ἐκεῖσε γάµον εὐλογήσας, εὐλόγησον καὶ τοὺς δούλους σου τούτους, τοὺς τῇ σῇ προνοίᾳ πρὸς γάµου κοινωνίαν συναφθέντας. | The priest says this prayer: “O God, our God, You who came to Cana of Galilee and blessed the marriage that took place there, bless also these Your servants here, who by Your divine providence have been joined by the bond of marriage.” | Καὶ ὁ Ἱερέας λέγει ἐτούτη τὴν Εὐχή. Εὐλόγησον αὐτῶν εἰσόδους καὶ ἐξόδους· πλήθυνον ἐν ἀγαθοῖς τὴν ζωὴν αὐτῶν· ἀνάλαβε *(ἐνταῦθα ὁ Ἱερεὺς αἴρει τοὺς στεφάνους ἀπὸ τῶν κεφαλῶν τῶν Νυµφίων, καὶ τίθησιν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης)* τοὺς στεφάνους αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου, ἀσπίλους καὶ ἀµώµους καὶ ἀνεπιβουλεύτους διατηρῶν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. | Bless the comings in and the goings out of the newlyweds⁵⁵; grant them long life with abundant good things; take* their crowns into Your Kingdom, preserving them pure, spotless, and unassailable⁵⁶—that is, that it may not enter anyone’s mind to defile them—unto the endless ages. | Εὐλόγησε τὶς εἰσόδους καὶ τὶς ἐξόδους τῶν νεονύµφων55· Χάρισέ τους µακροζωΐα µὲ ἄφθονα ἀγαθά· Πάρε* τὰ στέφανά τους στὴ Βασιλεία σου, διατηρώντας τα καθαρὰ καὶ ἀκηλίδωτα καὶ ἀνεπιβούλευτα56, χωρὶς δηλαδή νὰ••• περάσει ἀπὸ κανενὸς τὸ νοῦ νὰ••• τὰ µολύνει, στοὺς ἀτέλειωτους αἰῶνες. |

*Ὁ ἱερεύς·* Εἰρήνη πᾶσι. | At this point in the prayer, the Priest lifts the crowns from the heads of the newlyweds and places them on the table. Priest: Peace and serenity of soul be upon all. | * Ʃτὸ σηµεῖο τοῦτο τῆς Εὐχῆς ὁ Ἱερέας σηκώνει ἀπὸ τὰ κεφάλια τῶν νεονύµφων τὰ στέφανα καὶ τὰ τοποθετεῖ πάνω στὸ τραπέζι. Ὁ Ἱερέας· Εἰρήνη καὶ ψυχικὴ γαλήνη ἂς ἔλθει σὲ ὅλους. |
*Ὁ χορός·* Καὶ τῷ πνεύµατί σου. | Choir: And upon your spirit—and upon your soul—may peace and serenity come. | Ὁ χορός· Καὶ στὸ δικό σου πνεῦµα, καὶ στὴ δική σου ψυχὴ ἂς ἔλθει εἰρήνη καὶ γαλήνη. |
*Ὁ διάκονος·* Τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑµῶν τῷ Κυρίῳ κλίνατε. | *Deacon:* With the inclination of the head, bow to the Lord. | Ὁ Διάκονος Μὲ ὑπόκλιση τῆς κεφαλῆς προσκυνῆστε τὸν Κύριο. |
*Ὁ χορός·* Ʃοί, Κύριε. | *Choir:* To You, Lord, we bow the head. | *Ὁ χορός·* Ʃ᾿ ἐσένα, Κύριε, κλίνουµε τὸ κεφάλι. |
Καὶ εὔχεται ὁ “Ἱερεύς· Ὁ Πατήρ, ὁ Υἱὸς καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦµα, ἡ παναγία καὶ ὁµοούσιος καὶ ζωαρχικὴ Τριάς, ἡ µία Θεότης καὶ Βασιλεία, εὐλογήσαι ὑµᾶς, καὶ παράσχοι ὑµῖν µακροζωΐαν, εὐτεκνίαν, προκοπὴν βίου καὶ πίστεως, καὶ ἐµπλήσαι ὑµᾶς πάντων τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς ἀγαθῶν, ἀξιώσαι δὲ ὑµᾶς καὶ τῶν ἐπηγγελµένων ἀγαθῶν τῆς ἀπολαύσεως, πρεσβείαις τῆς ἁγίας Θεοτόκου, καὶ πάντων τῶν Ἁγίων.” | The priest prays: “May the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the All-holy Trinity, of one essence, from whom life springs forth, the one Godhead and Kingdom—bless you and grant you long life, many good children, progress in your life and growth in your faith. *Ὁ χορός·* Ἀµήν.” “Εἶτα εἰσέρχονται καὶ εὔχονται αὐτοῖς. | Choir: Amen, truly—so may it be. Then the faithful come near the newlyweds and offer them their good wishes. | *Ὁ χορός·* Ἀµήν, ἀλήθεια, ἔτσι ἂς γίνει. Ὕστερα ἔρχονται οἱ πιστοὶ κοντὰ στοὺς νεονύµφους καὶ τοὺς εὔχονται. |
Καὶ ἀσπασαµένων ἀλλήλους, γίνεται παρὰ τοῦ Ἱερέως τελεία Ἀπόλυσις οὕτως· | And after they have exchanged the kiss of peace, the Priest gives the full Dismissal as follows: | Καὶ ἀφοῦ ἀσπαστοῦν ὁ ἕνας τὸν ἄλλο, γίνεται ἀπὸ τὸν Ἱερέα ὁλοκληρωµένη Ἀπόλυση ὡς ἑξῆς· |
*Ὁ ἱερεύς·* Δόξα σοι, ὁ Θεός, ἡ ἐλπὶς ἡµῶν, δόξα σοι. | Priest: It is fitting that we send up glory to You—You who are our God, You who are our hope. Glory to You. | Ὁ Ἱερέας Δόξα ταιριάζει νὰ••• ἀναπέµπουµε σ᾿ ἐσένα, ποὺ εἶσαι ὁ Θεός µας, ποὺ εἶσαι ἡ ἐλπίδα µας, δόξα σ᾿ ἐσένα. |

Ʃύµφωνα καταντήσαντες οἱ δοῦλοί σου, Κύριε, καὶ τὴν ἀκολουθίαν ἐκτελέσαντες τοῦ ἐν Κανᾷ τῆς Γαλιλαίας γάµου, καὶ συστέλλοντες τὰ κατ᾿ αὐτὸν σύµβολα, δόξαν σοι ἀναπέµποµεν, τῷ Πατρί, καὶ τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ τῷ Ἁγίῳ Πνεύµατι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀµήν. | We, Lord, Your servants *(the newlyweds)* who by mutual consent have come to the mutual promise of marriage and have celebrated the Service of marriage which You sanctified in Cana of Galilee, we now, gathering up and wrapping the symbols of marriage *(the crowns)*, send up glory to You—the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit—now and always and unto the endless ages.
